  • ChasteBase README Part 1

I created Chess database and I named it ChasteBase. Creating the database was something of a challenge but was made easier by the fact that I have tools to enable me to filter through large lists of games.

What you are reading now is part 1 of a series where I document the necessary steps I took that eventually enabled me to create the database the way I want it.

    Step 0: The Workspace

I first created a folder on my Windows 11 laptop which I was going to be working in while I made my database.

    C:\ChasteBase

    Step 1: Download the games.

I Downloaded all of my lichess.org and chess.com games using En-Croissant. It can download them and then I just have to copy over the PGN files from where the program stores them. En-Croissant can also be used for analyzing the database as well.

The location of databases used by en-croissant:

    C:\Users\chand\AppData\Roaming\org.encroissant.app\db

    This gives me the files:

    chastitywhiterose_lichess.pgn
    chastitywhiterose_chesscom.pgn

They contain all of my games on these two platforms. However, for simplicity, I will only be using the lichess file for my example commands. Whenever I need to update the list and just refresh the database on En-Croissant and when export the games to the same file so that they are included the next time that I run my commands

Step 2: Download and install pgn-extract.

Really all I did to install it was choose a place to download it and add it to my path. Here is where I put it on my PC.

    C:\pgn-extract

Step 3: Run commands to choose the games to the ones I am interested in.

The following commands will extract all the games I have won. The first extracts all my wins as white. The second extracts all my wins as black. However, due to the –checkmate flag, only games ending in a checkmate will be listed.

    pgn-extract -Twchastitywhiterose -Tr1-0 chastitywhiterose_lichess.pgn –checkmate -ochastity_white_wins_lichess.pgn
    pgn-extract -Tbchastitywhiterose -Tr0-1 chastitywhiterose_lichess.pgn –checkmate -ochastity_black_wins_lichess.pgn

These commands work the way they do because of the flags I used. The full documentation of pgn-extract can be accessed at the link below.

    https://www.cs.kent.ac.uk/people/staff/djb/pgn-extract/

The idea of these steps is to be able to look at the games I won and see what I did right that helped me win. By including only games ending in a checkmate, I ensure that I didn’t win only by resignation or my opponent running out of time.

I wrote this document for myself mainly but I will share it with everyone, especially my Chess students because I believe creating a personal database of games to review and analyze is actually extremely helpful for seeing which moves they have the most success with. In fact, this data could reveal that certain openings are more in line with how a person’s brain operates. Or maybe they have practiced an opening more than others and we can see how often they started with it.

This was only step one of my quest to create ChasteBase. I needed to use my own games to test pgn-extract to see if it was possible to filter through the games in a reliable way. Eventually, my own games will be included in the database but I also want to include games of the greatest masters and my students. Analyzing Chess games can be fun. I also have some of the best software to use for analysis. I will be showing what software I like to use in my videos!

  • Chastity’s Chess Challenge November Newsletter

I had set myself a goal to make at least one post a month about how my business is going. For those who haven’t read my first post in October, I set myself on the path to be a Chess Coach. It is very clear that I have a lot of information to share about the game of Chess and I am gradually improving as a player and as a writer. In this month’s post, I would like to use some inspiration from my mother, Judena Klebs, who asked me what it is about the game of Chess that I like so much. For this reason, I have compiled a short list of the features that make Chess, as well as many variants like Shogi or Xiangqi, unique from other games.

    1. There is no chance or randomness based on dice, coin flip, spinning wheel, or random number generator.

Because Chess is only based on the decisions of the players, no external elements are used. Can you imagine if Chess was like Pokemon or Final Fantasy, where a piece might capture another piece but only if dice were rolled (like the game of Risk)? Can you imagine if the king was checkmated if a coin was flipped and landed on heads? Or what if random numbers were assigned and decided where a piece moves to instead of the players deciding it? These things would ruin Chess, and people would stop playing. In fact, their presence in other games is actually disgusting, in my opinion, because then games are about getting lucky instead of winning based on skill.

    2. Planning is possible

Because of the lack of random chance, as mentioned before, it is possible to plan a strategy or a plan A for my next move. Then, if, during my opponent’s turn, they make a move that ruins what I was going to do. I can make a plan B in case of this and repeat this process so that no matter what move they make, I have something ready to go. I like to plan and strategize instead of just doing what I feel like in the moment.

    3. Chess is for everyone of every race, gender, financial status, and age.

Any person who can see the board and pieces can place Chess. It doesn’t really matter what you look like or how old you are. It’s also a game where men and women are completely equal because it is a sport of the mind instead of physical strength.

Some people believe that men are smarter than women at Chess. I have actually listened to different people’s opinions on this, and it is worth mentioning because it’s a persistent myth that actually motivated me to get back into the game of Chess. Part of the reason for people believing this false statement is the presence of more men who are titled players traveling the world and winning tournaments. But then elements such as how much money they have to travel or whether women are allowed to participate in certain countries become a factor. There is also the problem of sexual harassment, and women are in physical danger in many places of the world.

But you don’t have to have a lot of money to play Chess for fun with your friends and family. In fact, you can play Chess online with random strangers if you have a computer or a cell phone and an internet connection. The fact is that Chess is a game where sexism, racism, homophobia, and transphobia have no place. It’s for that reason that in my AI songs about Chess, I often mention the equality between all people.

Those are the 3 main reasons I believe Chess is set apart from other board, card, and video games. Chess is something that is more accessible and uses the mind in a way other games don’t.

  • Public Chess Service Announcement

I am considering having a list of my best friends who play Chess so that I can include them in a credits sequence at the end of my Streams and videos.

I have figured out how to make rolling credit sequences with Adobe Premiere Pro, Openshot, and Kdenlive

Also, Kdenlive is probably the best Open Source video editor. I am finding it really easy to use. I will probably be using my video editing skills to make my episodes for YouTube and also start making commercials about my business.

I thank God that I have an unusual mix of talents, experience, skills, and I am learning a lot more because of my college programs.

If you play Chess and want to be included in the credits at the end of videos, please leave comments! I need a long list of names so I can make it long enough to have a closing theme song playing.

Also, if you play on any specific websites such as lichess.org or chess.com, include a link to your profile or give your username and let me know which platform. This could enable us to network and collaborate easier if we play Chess online for my episodes.

  • Chastity’s Chess Challenge: October Update

I have been quite sick lately, and my voice is not what it needs to be. Because of this, I have been unable to speak in my videos recently. I still play Chess every day, and it shows by my improvement at the game.

On September 30, 2024, My father, who lives in Minnesota, was in town to visit me. I requested to play Chess with him at the park. I beat him twice with no trouble. He is good and put up a fight. However, he does not have the level of practice that I do because I play online every day.

But what really shocked me is that he was unaware of the en passant rule in Chess, where a pawn moves two spaces on its first turn, but the enemy pawn can capture it “in passing” as if it had only moved one space. The fact that he did not seem to have learned this or simply forgot reminded me that I need to do a video on this topic when I get the chance.

At this stage in my business, I am trying to establish credibility as a Chess Coach and also find time even to play Chess with local people of Lee’s Summit. For these reasons, I have decided to write this update and explain two central aspects of what I do.

    1. I will play Chess locally with anyone in Lee’s Summit who contacts me. All we need is to set up a time to make it happen! I am an online Full Sail University student, and I work full-time at Walmart. My schedule keeps me quite busy, so if I forget about you, send me another message, call, or text me at 816-844-2077.
    2. I play Chess online at “lichess.org”. It is the best site for playing Chess online because no ads are trying to get someone to pay for a “premium membership” for whatever that is supposed to mean. The entire site is an open-source project, and I donate $5 on a monthly basis because I believe in the principles of what they are doing. Anyone can challenge me online to correspondence games no matter what schedule I have or they have. It’s not the same as a real over-the-board experience, but it is the way I have improved.

    https://lichess.org/@/chastitywhiterose

It can be really hard to find local people who even know how to play Chess. It is because of this that I decided to start my business, Chastity’s Chess Challenge, to teach Chess to people who have heard of Chess but don’t know how to play or even where to start.

At least for now, I will be teaching people Chess for free. Those who find my services helpful and want to donate to me voluntarily can, but I won’t require it. In this way, my business model is identical to “lichess.org”. Besides, I love playing Chess, so you’re doing me a favor just by playing with me.
